A Rainy Day Proposal at Villa Honegg, Switzerland | Harman & Joyce

When Harman reached out to plan his proposal to Joyce, he had one venue in mind: Villa Honegg. And honestly, it is hard to argue with that instinct. Perched above Lake Lucerne at 900 metres, with views of the Alps that make grown adults stop mid-sentence, Villa Honegg is one of those places that makes everything feel more significant. More cinematic. More like a scene from a life well-lived.
The only thing Harman had not planned for was the weather.

When the Alps decide otherwise
Switzerland in the mountains means weather that changes its mind without warning. On the day of Harman's proposal, the rain came in, soft at first, then committed. The meadow overlooking the lake, where he had imagined getting down on one knee with the Bürgenstock ridge in the background, was not going to cooperate.
This is the moment where a proposal photographer who knows the venue makes all the difference.
I had photographed at Villa Honegg before. I knew the spaces, the light, the corners of the property that most guests never find. And I knew the cigar room, a room with a character all its own, dressed that day in the most extraordinary floral installation I had seen in a long time.

The cigar room and Alessandra's touch
The proposal decor had been created by Alessandra of Les Entremetteuses Swiss a swiss-based event designer I have had the pleasure of working with regularly, and one of the most talented people in the Swiss wedding and proposal world. She had transformed the room with an installation in deep blues, crisp whites and warm gold: floral arrangements that felt at once opulent and intimate, the kind of décor that makes a space feel like it was built for exactly this moment.

Joyce walked in not knowing what to expect. Within seconds, she understood.
The moment
I will not narrate it in detail, some moments belong to the people who lived them. What I can say is that the room held them perfectly. The low light of the interior, the warmth of gold against blue, Joyce's expression, the surprise that even someone who half-expects a proposal cannot prepare for, these are the images I will remember from this day.
Harman had chosen well. Not just the venue, not just the decor, not just the timing. He had chosen Joyce.

After the yes, champagne and alpine light
Once the tears had settled and the ring had been properly admired, Villa Honegg does what Villa Honegg does best: it takes care of you.
The couple toasted on the terrace, and as it often happens in the Swiss Alps, the rain had other plans by then. By the time they stepped outside with their champagne, the clouds had shifted and the lake below had returned to that particular shade of grey-blue that makes the whole landscape look like a painting in progress.
Later, we moved to the meadows surrounding the hotel. The grass was wet from the rain, which meant the light was extraordinary, that clean, washed quality that photographers secretly hope for even as they pretend to share your concern about the forecast. Joyce in her white dress against the green of the Nidwalden hills. Harman in his suit, smiling in the specific way that only happens on days like this.
Lake Lucerne below. The Alps in every direction. Not a bad backdrop for the first photographs of an engaged couple.
Planning a proposal at Villa Honegg, in Switzerland
If you are considering Villa Honegg for a proposal, and I hope you are, here is what I would tell you as someone who knows it well:
Book the venue early. Villa Honegg has a small number of rooms and is consistently full, particularly in summer and winter peak season. If your date matters to you, plan six to twelve months in advance.
Have a backup plan. This is Switzerland, and the mountains write their own schedule. A good proposal photographer will know the indoor spaces as well as the outdoor ones, and a good event planner like Alessandra will build contingency into the design. The rain that changed Harman's outdoor plan gave us the cigar room, and the cigar room gave us something neither of us had imagined.
The meadows are best in the hour before sunset. The light that falls across the lake from the west in that last hour is unlike anything else I know in Switzerland.
Getting there: Villa Honegg is located above Ennetbürgen, in the canton of Nidwalden, accessible by car or taxi. From the Bürgenstock, 26 minutes. From Lucerne, it is approximately 45 minutes. From Zurich, under two hours.
About Harman and Joyce
Harman and Joyce flew in from Canada for this proposal, the kind of trip that says something about how seriously someone takes a moment. They brought elegance with them: she in a white dress that held its own against every backdrop we put it in front of, he in a suit that made the cigar room look like it had been waiting for him.
They were also, quietly, two of the most lovely people I have shared a morning with in a long time. The kind of couple you find yourself rooting for before you've even checked the light.

Congratulations, Harman and Joyce! Switzerland was honoured to be part of your story.
