A Proposal at the Baur au Lac, in Zurich | Néstor & Yaz

PLANNED WITH THE FAMILY, CELEBRATED WITH CHAMPAGNE IN THE GARDEN OF THE HOTEL BAUR AU LAC: YAZ AND NESTOR'S MARRIAGE PROPOSAL IN ZURICH

Some proposals in Zürich are planned entirely by one person, in secret, from thousands of miles away. Néstor's was a little different, and, in many ways, even more special: he planned it together with his mother, and his family, who helped him have the proposal of his dreams in Zurich, Switzerland.

Néstor and Yaz had traveled from Mexico for a family trip to Switzerland, and somewhere inside the planning of that trip, an idea quietly took shape. Néstor wanted to propose to Yaz during their time in Zürich, and he wanted his family to be part of making it happen. I liaised with both him and his mum, who was the kindest and sweetest person, and deeply admired my work and trusted my vision. Through multiple emails and a video call, we explored many venues and locations together: they wanted a place that was beautiful, central in Zurich and also secluded, a high end place where the proposal could happen naturally, in an intimate environment that also looked beautiful and luxurious: I walked them through different venues I knew, but from the very beginning I knew which one was the right for them, a setting that felt as elegant and considered as the moment itself: the Baur au Lac, Zurich.

WHY THE BAUR AU LAC IS ONE OF THE MOST ELEGANT PLACES FOR A PROPOSAL IN ZURICH

The Baur au Lac is, without much competition, one of Zürich's most iconic hotels, a five-star property set in its own private park at the edge of the Schanzengraben canal, just steps from Lake Zürich. It has hosted royalty, diplomats and artists since 1844, and that sense of quiet, old-world elegance is exactly what makes it such a striking backdrop for a proposal in Zürich.

I spoke with Néstor and his mother over a video call in the weeks before the trip, working through timing, the layout of the gardens, and how to make the moment feel natural rather than staged, something I do for almost every proposal in Zürich I plan with couples or families coming from abroad. Coordinating from another continent can feel daunting, but it rarely needs to be. A short call is usually enough to settle the details that matter most: where to stand, when to arrive, and how to keep the secret intact until the very last second.

THE PROPOSAL AT THE BAUR AU LAC

Néstor chose a quiet corner of the Baur au Lac's private garden, manicured lawns, mature trees, and the kind of soft, dappled light that this part of Zürich seems to specialise in. Yaz had no idea what was coming and her reaction was the kind that photographs do not need captions for, and that Néstor's mother, watching from a quiet distance, was just as moved as her son.

CHAMPAGNE IN THE GARDEN IN FRONT OF LAKE ZURICH

Once the ring was on and the first wave of disbelief had turned into laughter, the three of them moved to a table in the hotel garden, where champagne was already waiting. There is something quietly perfect about celebrating a proposal in Zürich at a hotel that has spent over 180 years perfecting exactly this kind of moment, attentive without being intrusive, elegant without ever feeling stiff.

We spent the next hour photographing around the garden and the edge of the canal, with the Baur au Lac's gardens giving us soft greens, still water, and the particular calm that comes from being in one of the few genuinely quiet corners of central Zürich.

PLANNING A PROPOSAL IN ZÜRICH WITH FAMILY INVOLVED

Néstor and Yaz's proposal is a good example of something I get asked about often: how to plan a proposal in Zürich when other family members are involved, or when the trip itself is a group trip rather than a couple's getaway.

My advice for everyone planning a proposal in Zürich or anywhere in Switzerland is usually the same:

  • Loop me in early. A short call with whoever is helping plan, a parent, a sibling, a best friend, makes coordination on the day far smoother.

  • Choose a setting with built-in privacy. Hotel gardens, like the Baur au Lac's, offer elegance without the unpredictability of a fully public space.

  • Plan for a small celebration immediately after. Whether it's champagne in a garden or a reservation at a restaurant nearby, having something arranged for right after the proposal makes the whole experience feel complete.

If you are planning a proposal in Zürich, or anywhere in Switzerland, whether it's just the two of you or, like Néstor, with family quietly involved in the plan, I'd love to help bring it together.
