A Rainy Wedding in Zermatt: An Adventurous Celebration at the Sonnmatten hotel and Gornergrat

Digital + Film

When people imagine a wedding in Zermatt, they often picture blue skies, clear views of the Matterhorn, and a perfect summer day in the Swiss Alps. This wedding was something different.

Over the course of a single day, we experienced dramatic mountain clouds, sunshine, strong winds at nearly 3,100 metres above sea level, and rain during the ceremony itself. And somehow, all of it made the celebration even more beautiful. As a wedding photographer in Switzerland who works every year in Zermatt, I've learned that the mountains always have the final say. The couples who enjoy their day the most are usually the ones who embrace whatever nature brings. This couple did exactly that.

Getting Ready at the Sonnmatten hotel in Zermatt

The day began at the Sonnmatten, one of my favourite wedding venues in Zermatt. Located above the village with incredible views of the surrounding mountains, the hotel combines traditional Alpine charm with a relaxed luxury that feels perfectly suited to destination weddings in Switzerland.

Both the bride and groom got ready at the hotel, allowing for a calm and intimate start to the day. While final touches were being completed, guests slowly arrived and the anticipation began to build. One detail I particularly loved was the bride's Jimmy Choo shoes, which added an elegant touch while still feeling timeless and understated. Outside, clouds drifted across the peaks surrounding Zermatt, creating the kind of dramatic atmosphere that photographers secretly love.

A First Look Among Chalets, Forests and Mountains

Before heading to the ceremony, the couple chose to do a private first look. Rather than meeting at the ceremony or at the hotel, we found a quiet location tucked away from the centre of Zermatt, surrounded by traditional wooden chalets, Alpine forest, and mountain views in every direction. One of the reasons I love photographing weddings in Zermatt is that you never need to travel far to find beautiful scenery. Within minutes, you can move from the village into landscapes that feel completely untouched. Their first look was simple, emotional, and private, the perfect opportunity to slow down before the celebrations began.

Portraits at Gornergrat During an Alpine Storm

One of the most memorable parts of the day happened before the ceremony. The couple had decided to take the Gornergrat Railway into the mountains for their wedding portraits. If you're planning a wedding in Zermatt, Gornergrat is one of the most spectacular locations in Switzerland for couple photos, offering panoramic views of glaciers and some of the highest peaks in the Alps. But the mountains had other plans.

Shortly after arriving, a powerful storm rolled across the ridge. The wind became incredibly strong, clouds moved rapidly through the landscape, and visibility changed from one minute to the next. Most couples would probably have turned around. Instead, these two embraced the adventure. Looking back, some of my favourite photographs from the entire wedding came from those conditions. The movement in the dress, the dramatic skies, the energy of the weather, it all created images that could never have existed on a calm, sunny day.

An Outdoor Ceremony in Zermatt... and Unexpected Rain

Back at the Sonnmatten, guests gathered for the outdoor ceremony overlooking the Swiss Alps. The views were stunning, and for a while it seemed as though the weather might hold. Then, halfway through the ceremony, it started to rain.
Within moments, umbrellas appeared among the guests while the couple continued exchanging their vows. What I remember most is that nobody seemed bothered. There was laughter, smiles, and a sense that everyone understood they were witnessing something special. The rain didn't interrupt the ceremony; it became part of it.
Years from now, I doubt anyone will remember what the weather forecast predicted. They will remember standing together in the mountains while rain fell around them as two people promised to spend their lives together.

A Symbolic Alpine Ritual

Following the ceremony, the couple incorporated a second symbolic celebration inspired by Alpine traditions.
Using mountain herbs and spices, they participated in a meaningful ritual that reflected their connection to nature and to the place where they had chosen to marry. It was a beautiful reminder that destination weddings can be about much more than a stunning backdrop. The location itself can become part of the story.

Dinner, Cake and a Relaxed Evening Celebration

As the weather settled outside, guests moved indoors for dinner at the Sonnmatten restaurant.
The evening felt warm and relaxed from the very beginning. There were heartfelt speeches, excellent food, plenty of laughter, and the kind of atmosphere that naturally develops when everyone genuinely enjoys being together.
After dinner came cake, drinks, and a laid-back evening spent celebrating with family and friends. No elaborate production. No rigid timeline. Just a wonderful ending to an unforgettable day in the Swiss Alps.

Since 2025, I have been offering film wedding photography in Switzerland, either as a complement to digital coverage or as a fully analog experience. The images below were captured on a Canon EOS 3 and showcase the soft tones, natural grain, and timeless character that make film photography so special for weddings.
