Castello di Morcote, in Ticino, is one of my favorite locations for a wedding in Switzerland, especially if you want Ticino -italian vibes, a beautiful lake, the look of a medieval castle and appreciate a beautiful garden with a view for your day.

When you arrive to Castello di Morcote, the first thing you notice is not the castle, but the lake surrounding it: Lake Lugano is down below the terraces, with the mountains closing in on both sides in a way that makes this beautiful Castle look like it's on top of it.

The castle comes after, once you've climbed through the village, and by then the setting has already done half the work a wedding photographer usually has to do alone: your wedding pictures here will definitely look unconventional.

Alexandra and Marco got married here in July 2026 and the drone frames from that day are still some of the clearest arguments I have for why this venue is one of my favorites in Switzerland. .

The castle: why you should consider Castello di Morcote as your wedding venue

Castello di Morcote sits above the village of Vico Morcote, part of a working wine estate with the 15th-century castle at its center. The marquee, the main reception space, set beside the fortress walls with the lake and mountains behind it, holds up to 160 guests and runs from April through October. Smaller, more intimate celebrations can be hosted directly in the castle or the wine cellar, which suits winter dates or guest counts under 40 far better than the marquee does.

The estate also includes Relais Castello di Morcote, a boutique hotel a short walk from the castle, and two restaurants, one for formal dinners, one higher up the hillside with views that make it a natural choice for a rehearsal dinner or a post-ceremony aperitivo.

A few things worth asking your planner before you book, none of which show up on the venue's own page: how exposed the marquee is to wind coming off the lake in late afternoon, whether the courtyard gets full sun during your ceremony window, and how far golf carts run between the parking area and the castle for guests who can't manage the walk up.

Castello di Morcote: what your wedding pictures will look like here and what to keep in mind

Most Castello di Morcote coverage, including the venue's own galleries, shoots it the way you'd shoot any Ticino castle: ground level, guests in frame, lake in the background. That's not wrong, but it misses what makes the location unusual, which is the vertical drop from castle to water and the way the terraced vineyards read as pattern from above.

From the air, the ceremony space and the marquee sit inside the wine estate's terracing like a single composed frame, something no ground shot can replicate. It's also the only angle that shows how isolated the whole property is from the village below, which is a big part of why couples choose it in the first place. A handful of well-placed drone frames, one during the ceremony, one at golden hour over the marquee, one wide shot of the whole estate as guests gather for the aperitivo, do more to sell the feeling of the place than another thirty ground portraits would. If you are getting married here, make sure your photographer offers drone photography as well or perhaps consider hiring a second photographer, at the very least, to get them. The perspectives you will get from above the lake are unmatched, and you will certainly miss a lot of stunning angles if you are missing the drone.

The wedding: ceremony options in Morcote

For the ceremony, you can have it at the castle gardens, with the beautiful view of lake Lugano behind you, or inside of the castle (which can be a backup plan for rainy days). If you are eloping, the Belvedere can also be a good option, with its dramatic views.

If you are looking for a christian celebration, there are many options. Alexandra and Marco wanted to have a church wedding, so they decided to get married at the Chiesa dei SS. Fedele e Simone, very close to Castello di Morcote, and then traveled there with their wedding party for a beautiful evening with a jazz band, italian food and stunning lake and mountain views. For dinner, they used the tent that the castle has on its side, beautifully decorated with white hydrangeas and other florals and candles, from which you get to see the lake and the town below. Before dinner, they went to the Belvedere, an emblamatic spot of the Castello di Morcote where most couples have their wedding pictures taken. A beautiful and elegant evening.

However, if you asked me, as an art historian, my heart would go for another church nearby: Santa Maria del Saso is a medieval church nearby that can also be an option for a religious ceremony. Its emblematic tower and its colorful freschi inside make this church stand out. There is a catch: the staircase to reach the church, which is, however, well suited with many fountains to drink some water, which is very much appreciated during the summer.
