Switzerland is one of those countries that makes a photographer's job almost unfair. Wherever you stand, a terrace above Lake Lucerne, a vineyard castle above Lake Lugano, a grand belle époque hotel facing the Jungfrau, the backdrop does most of the work. The challenge isn't finding beauty. It's deciding where to look first.
I'm Gloria, a destination wedding photographer based in Switzerland since 2019, with work featured in Vogue, Tatler, and Switzerland Tourism. I've photographed weddings and elopements across this country for six years, in castles, lakeside palaces, alpine lodges, and private islands. Below is my honest guide to the ten venues I recommend most, not based on a press kit or a partnership, but on what I've actually seen, shot, and experienced firsthand.
How to Choose a Wedding Venue in Switzerland
Before diving in: the "best" venue depends entirely on what kind of day you want. A few things worth considering before you fall in love with a photo:
Scale: are you hosting 200 guests or eloping with two witnesses?
Vibe: grand and historic, or intimate and alpine?
Region: lake views, mountain peaks, Mediterranean palms, or city elegance?
Season: some venues are extraordinary in summer and average in winter, and vice versa
With that in mind, here are the ten venues I'd recommend without hesitation — across different styles, regions, and scales.
1. Villa Honegg, Lake Lucerne
Best for: Intimate elopements and micro-weddings, couples who want complete privacy and jaw-dropping lake and mountain views
Villa Honegg sits on a hillside above the Bay of Bürgenstock, with 360° panoramic views over Lake Lucerne and the surrounding Alps. It's a five-star boutique hotel, just 23 rooms, which means it never feels crowded, the service is extraordinarily personal, and on the right day, the grounds feel entirely like yours.
As a photographer, this is one of my favourite venues in Switzerland at any time of year. In summer, the infinity pool steams against a backdrop of golden light and the Alps at dusk. In winter, the snow-covered grounds are completely silent and the lake below turns pewter-grey in a way that photographs beautifully. I've shot here in both seasons — the results are different, and both are extraordinary.
The terrace and gardens are ideal for ceremonies and couple portraits, with the lake and mountains providing a backdrop that requires no additional styling whatsoever. For couples planning a small, private, elevated wedding in Switzerland, Villa Honegg is my first recommendation.
2. Baur au Lac, Zürich
Best for: Large, elegant destination weddings in the city; couples who want five-star urban sophistication combined with lake views
Founded in 1844, the Baur au Lac is Zürich's most iconic hotel, and arguably Switzerland's most legendary urban wedding venue. It sits directly on Lake Zürich, with a private park, elegant ballrooms, and the kind of discreet, polished service that only comes from nearly 180 years of practice.
The hotel's Pavillon restaurant and private event spaces can accommodate weddings of significant scale, while the park and lakeside terrace offer beautiful settings for outdoor ceremonies and portraits. The proximity to Zürich's old city also makes it ideal for couples who want to incorporate the city into their day, the Limmat, Grossmünster, and Niederdorf are all within walking distance for portraits.
As a photographer, the Baur au Lac rewards detail work, the interiors are genuinely beautiful, the light through the park in the afternoon is soft and directional, and the combination of lake, city skyline, and grand architecture offers enormous variety in a compact area.
3. The Dolder Grand, Zürich
Best for: Couples who want a grand, architecturally distinctive venue with city and lake panoramas; large weddings and receptions
Perched on the Zürichberg hill above the city, The Dolder Grand is one of Switzerland's great architectural showpieces, a 1899 building extended and reimagined by Norman Foster in 2008, with 175 rooms, a 4,000m² spa, and panoramic views over Zürich and the lake. The ballrooms and event spaces can accommodate large weddings with full production, while the gardens and terraces provide more intimate options for ceremonies and cocktail hours.
What makes it distinctive as a wedding venue is the combination of scale and visual drama, it looks like a castle from the outside, feels like a contemporary five-star hotel inside, and the views from the upper terraces on a clear day are genuinely remarkable.
4. Cervo Mountain Resort, Zermatt
Best for: Alpine weddings with direct Matterhorn views; couples who want high-altitude drama combined with five-star luxury
Zermatt is car-free, reachable only by mountain train, and sits at the foot of the Matterhorn, which means that simply arriving feels like an event. Cervo Mountain Resort leans into that feeling fully: a collection of alpine chalets perched on a hillside above the village, with direct, unobstructed views of the Matterhorn from almost every terrace.
The venue has a distinctly different feel from the lakeside hotels on this list, raw timber, open fires, sheepskins, and a sense of being genuinely in the mountains rather than beside them. For couples who want their wedding to feel like an alpine adventure rather than a grand hotel event, Cervo is hard to beat.
Photographically, Zermatt in any season is extraordinary, the Matterhorn provides a backdrop that is immediately, unmistakably Swiss, and the combination of the mountain with the warm, rustic interiors of Cervo creates enormous visual range in a single venue.

5. Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa, Interlaken
Best for: Grand, historic destination weddings with Jungfrau views; large guest lists; couples who want old-world European elegance
The Victoria-Jungfrau opened in 1865 and has been hosting significant celebrations ever since. It sits in the heart of Interlaken, facing the Jungfrau massif, with 22 function rooms ranging from intimate salons to the grand La Salle de Versailles, a ballroom that can accommodate up to 400 guests for dinner.
It's one of the few venues in Switzerland with genuine capacity for a very large destination wedding, combined with five-star service and historic grandeur. The heritage-listed Salon Napoléon, with its original Murano chandelier, one of the largest in Europe, is particularly extraordinary. In summer, the garden and terrace facing the Jungfrau provide one of the most spectacular ceremony backdrops in the Bernese Oberland.
For photographers, the combination of grand belle époque interiors and the dramatic mountain backdrop offers the greatest stylistic range of any venue on this list, from intimate candlelit details inside to wide, panoramic landscape shots outside.
6. Schloss Schadau, Thun
Best for: Fairy-tale castle weddings on a lake; couples who want romantic historic architecture without the scale of a grand hotel
Schloss Schadau sits on the shores of Lake Thun, surrounded by English-style gardens, with the Bernese Alps visible across the water. Built in the 19th century in Scottish Gothic style, the castle has a genuinely distinctive character, turrets, bay windows, stone terraces, that makes it one of the most visually recognizable wedding venues in Switzerland.
The grounds include a boathouse, a lakeside park, and garden terraces that are ideal for ceremonies and cocktail hours, while the castle interior provides atmospheric spaces for dining and dancing. Capacity is more suited to mid-size weddings than very large events — which, for most couples, is exactly right.
7. The Chedi Andermatt
Best for: Alpine weddings with a distinctive Asian-meets-alpine design aesthetic; intimate to mid-size weddings; couples who want something genuinely different
The Chedi Andermatt opened in 2013 and immediately redefined what a luxury hotel in the Swiss Alps could look like. Situated at 1,444 metres above sea level in the Ursern Valley, it combines traditional alpine materials, dark wood, natural stone, with Japanese-influenced minimalism: clean lines, paper lanterns, over 200 fireplaces throughout the property.
The result is a venue that feels unlike anything else in Switzerland. The Wine Library can host intimate ceremony dinners for up to 100 guests; the main event spaces accommodate up to 180; and for couples willing to think creatively, the surrounding valley, with direct access to the Gotthard mountain passes, provides extraordinary outdoor ceremony locations.
Two of the five restaurants hold Michelin stars, which makes the culinary side of a Chedi wedding genuinely exceptional. And unlike most Swiss mountain venues, Andermatt is accessible by car from Zurich in 90 minutes and Lucerne in 50, meaning guests don't need to navigate mountain trains or cable cars.
8. Hotel Vitznauerhof, Vitznau, Lake Lucerne
Best for: Intimate to mid-size lakeside weddings on Lake Lucerne; couples who want seclusion, intimacy, and world-class food
hotel Vitznauerhof has been on the shores of Lake Lucerne since 1903, and it remains one of the most quietly extraordinary hotels in Switzerland. With just 47 residences, suites, and junior suites, it's genuinely intimate by five-star standards, and the level of service reflects that. The hotel holds a private lake terrace that is one of the most beautiful ceremony spaces on the lake.
As a photographer, I find this one of the most generous venues on Lake Lucerne, the lakeside grounds, the terraces, the interiors, and the backdrop of Rigi and the mountains across the water provide variety without ever feeling overwhelming.
9. Castello di Morcote, Lake Lugano, Ticino
Best for: Couples who want a medieval castle, vineyard setting, and Mediterranean atmosphere; intimate to mid-size weddings; something genuinely unique
Castello di Morcote is Switzerland's best-kept wedding secret. Located in Ticino, the Italian-speaking canton of Switzerland, just an hour from Lake Como and two hours from Milan, it sits 400 metres above Lake Lugano on an organic wine estate, with 15th-century castle walls enclosing a garden and courtyard that look over the lake toward the mountains.
The setting combines things you rarely find together: genuine medieval history, working vineyards, wine produced on-site, a 12-room boutique hotel in a 17th-century former convent below the castle, and a 270m² panoramic marquee that can host up to 160 guests for dinner. Ticino's mild Mediterranean climate means outdoor ceremonies are reliably possible from April through October, and the palm trees and subtropical vegetation give it an atmosphere closer to the Italian lakes than anything else in Switzerland.
For couples who want Europe's castle-and-lake wedding aesthetic without the crowds of Como or the prices of Tuscany, Castello di Morcote is extraordinary value for what it offers.
10. Villa Emden, Isole di Brissago, Lake Maggiore, Ticino
Best for: Ultra-intimate island weddings; couples who want complete seclusion; the most dramatic "secret garden" setting in Switzerland
Villa Emden is genuinely unlike any other venue on this list, because it's on an island. The neoclassical villa sits at the heart of Isola Grande di Brissago, the larger of the two Brissago Islands in Lake Maggiore, surrounded by 2.5 acres of subtropical botanical gardens that thrive in Ticino's mild climate: eucalyptus groves, Roman bath ruins, subtropical plants rarely seen this far north in Europe.
The island is reachable only by boat from Ascona, which means your guests arrive by water, the island is entirely private for your event, and there are no roads, no cars, and no passing strangers. The villa accommodates up to 10 double rooms for exclusive buy-out, and the venue can host up to 120 guests for a ceremony and celebration.
Civil ceremonies can be held in the Red Room inside the villa. Outdoor options include the eucalyptus meadow, the historic Roman bath ruins, and a lakeside lawn with views across the water toward Italy. As a setting, it's as close to a private island wedding as Switzerland gets, and the botanical garden alone makes it one of the most photographically distinctive venues in the country.
